What is infertility?
After a year of regular sexual intercourse without pregnancy, one may begin to suspect the existence of some alteration in fertility. In case of more advanced ages it is recommended to consult after six months of sexual intercourse without achieving a pregnancy.
The human species does not have a high reproductive power; there is talk of a 25% chance of pregnancy in the sexual relationship maintained at the time of ovulation of a woman. Approximately 1 in 6 couples of childbearing age will be affected by sterility. These percentages concern women under 35, from that age the reproductive potential decreases and after 40 years, the possibility of pregnancy per month is less than 10%.
Tests to see if a partner or both are infertile
Tests to determine infertility include a complete medical history and physical examination of both partners. In the specific case of women, the basic tests are the baseline hormonal study, ultrasound and hysterosalpingography, although the range can be extended depending on the patient. To complete the diagnosis, it will also be necessary to assess, in the case of man, the quality of semen by means of a seminogram (or spermiogram).
