PREIMPLANTATIONAL GENETIC DIAGNOSIS

1. What is Preimplantation Genetic Diagnosis (PGD)?

Preimplantation Genetic Diagnosis (PGD) is a technique that allows obtaining genetic information from embryos before transfer to the mother’s womb.

2. Who is the DGP for?

It is recommended to resort to Preimplantation Genetic Diagnosis in the following cases:

E

Advanced maternal age: women over 38 years old

E

Implantation failures: transfer of more than 2 embryos of good quality without success.

E

Repeated abortions: patient with 2 or more previous abortions.

E

Alterations in sperm DNA.

E

Patients with inherited diseases that do not want them to be transmitted to their offspring.

Treatment phases

LThe phases of Preimplantation Genetic Diagnosis are as follows

1. In Vitro fertilization that allows to obtain several embryos

2. Embryonic biopsy

Embryonic biopsy is performed on day 5 or 6 of embryonic development. During this process, several cells of the embryo are obtained that will be analyzed genetically

3. Embryonic freezing

In order to ensure better endometrial preparation and waiting for genetic results, biopsied embryos must be frozen. This process implies that embryo transfer takes place in a later cycle.

4. Genetic Analysis

The cells obtained by biopsy are processed for analysis and subjected to genetic study.

5. Embryonic transfer

Once the result is known, if any suitable embryo is obtained, it will be devitrified and transferred to the mother’s womb waiting for the desired pregnancy to occur.
